Martin Oaks Cemetery—A Brief History

Martin Oaks Cemetery lies in the heart of Louisville, Texas, and serves as a serene and peaceful resting place, with roots deeply embedded in the area’s extensive history. Originally part of the expansive and flourishing Martin Cattle Ranch, this land transitioned from being a bustling family farm to a tranquil cemetery, thoughtfully preserving the cherished legacy of the Martin family and the rich past of the entire region. The cemetery stands as a testament to those who came before, reflecting the time-honored traditions and stories that shaped this vibrant community.

The Martin Family Legacy

The Martin family established their cattle ranch in what is now Lewisville, contributing significantly to the local agricultural community. As was customary in the 19th century, they designated a portion of their land as a family burial plot. The earliest recorded grave dates back to 1874, marking the beginning of what would become Martin Oaks Cemetery.

Among one of the early residents interred at Martin Oaks is David B. “Dock” Martin (1878–1911). Born in 1878, Dock was a brother to J.D. Martin, who had been associated with the Spur Ranch since 1906. Dock’s remains were transferred to Lewisville in 1911, underscoring the family’s deep ties to the area.

One of the last Martin Family members to be interred is Jimmy Don Martin (1947–2014): A lifelong resident of Lewisville, Jimmy Don Martin was known for his dedication to the community. He dies in Spur, Dickens County, Texas, as a result of being thrown from his horse. His interment at Martin Oaks Cemetery reflects the family’s enduring presence in the region.

Evolution into a Community Cemetery

Over time, as the community grew and the need for burial spaces increased, the family plot expanded beyond the Martin lineage. The cemetery became a final resting place for many local residents, reflecting the area’s evolving demographics and history. Throughout the years, Martin Oaks Cemetery changed hands several times, each transition adding layers to its rich narrative.

Preserving History

Today, Martin Oaks Cemetery stands as a testament to Lewisville’s heritage. Each headstone tells a story, not just of the individuals interred but also of the community’s journey through time. The transformation from the Martin family’s cattle ranch to a community cemetery encapsulates the dynamic nature of land use and the importance of preserving local history.
